Sports Update for Feb. 20

Men’s basketball earns third seed in conference tournament

The Virginia Peninsula Community College men’s basketball team finished regular-season conference play Feb. 18 with a 79-70 victory over Mid-Atlantic Christian University at Warwick High School on Family and Friends Day.

In the New South Athletic Conference tournament, the third-seeded Gators will play host to No. 6 Christendom College on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. at Warwick High School. If the Gators win, they will take on No. 2 seed Mid-Atlantic Christian on Feb. 25 at The Apprentice School. The final is set for Feb. 26, also at Apprentice. The Builders, who went 11-0 in conference play, earned the top seed and drew a first-round bye. Mid-Atlantic Christian also drew a first-round bye.

In the Gators’ win over Mid-Atlantic Christian, Quishaun Brevard led the way with 24 points and six steals. Jhalen Harris added 22 points, five rebounds and five assists. Javion Majette chipped in 15 points, five rebounds and seven assists, and Keshaun Johnson had six points, 10 rebounds and six blocks.

Prior to the game, the athletic department recognized the sophomores on the volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the cheerleaders.

In the Gators’ only other game last week, they lost 94-70 to Washington Adventist in a non-conference game in Takoma Park, Md., on Feb. 17.

Baseball goes 3-2 for the week  

The baseball team had a great weekend, winning three of four, including a doubleheader sweep of Monroe College of the Bronx on Feb. 19 on Family and Friends Day. The Gators won the first game 12-6, and the second 14-1. In the first game, Jude Morton, Zac Barco and Lamon Lyles each had two hits. In the second game, the Gators were led by Morton, who had a single, double and drove in four runs. Barco and Aydan Harmon added RBI doubles, and Lyles had an RBI single.

On Feb. 18, Monroe College opened with a 9-3 victory, but the Gators took the nightcap 6-5. In the second game, Morton hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for the victory. Michael Adams added two hits.

Their week started with a 21-4 loss at Bryant and Stratton on Feb. 15.

Next week, the team plays a doubleheader at P.D. Camp on Feb. 25. The first game starts at noon. The next day, the two teams have a nine-inning game at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, also starting at noon.
